Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education
PSHE statement of intent
By the time they leave Northgate we aim for our children to;
Have developed life skills to become responsible and effective citizens, understanding others and celebrating differences.
PSHCE is a vital part of the curriculum which aims to give pupils the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to lead confident, healthy, independent lives and to become informed, active and responsible citizens.
Pupils are encouraged to take part in a wide range of activities and experiences across and beyond the curriculum, including circle time and contributing fully to the life of their school and community. In doing so they recognise their own worth, work well with others and become increasingly responsible for their own learning. They reflect on their experiences and understand how they are developing personally and socially, tackling many of the spiritual, moral, social and cultural issues.
At Northgate we follow a scheme of work called JIGSAW. It is a mindful approach to PSHCE and a comprehensive scheme of learning which includes emotional literacy (the Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning Programme is incorporated within the JIGSAW scheme and is for teaching social, emotional and behavioural skills to all pupils), social skills and spiritual development. Jigsaw is designed as a whole school approach, with all year groups working on the same theme (Puzzle) at the same time. This enables each Puzzle to start with an introductory assembly, generating a whole school focus for adults and children alike.
The Six Puzzles
There are six Puzzles in Jigsaw that are designed to progress in sequence from September to July:
Autumn 1: Being Me in My World
Autumn 2: Celebrating Difference (including anti-bullying)
Spring 1: Dreams and Goals
Spring 2: Healthy Me
Summer 1: Relationships
Summer 2: Changing Me including RSE (Relationship and Sex Education)
