Design and Technology
Design and Technology statement of intent
By the time they leave Northgate we aim for our children to;
Understand how things are designed and made and, using these skills, create with a purpose. To also know that problem solving and mistakes are vital parts of the process.
Design and Technology encourages children to learn to think and intervene creatively to solve problems both as individuals and as members of a team. They are taught to look for opportunities and to respond to them by developing a range of ideas and making a range of products. The children are also given opportunities to reflect upon and evaluate past and present design technology, its uses and its effectiveness and are encouraged to become innovators.
Design and Technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject that is taught via links to topics incorporating different subjects of the national curriculum.
Using creativity and imagination, pupils design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. They acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on many other disciplines such as English, mathematics, science, computing and art.
Pupils learn how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens. Through evaluation and refining of their designs and products, they are taught to be reflective and resilient learners. Through the evaluation of past and present design and technology, they develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world.
